HURRICANE SEASON OF 1998 IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC

Individual characteristics of tropical Cyclones in 1998

«ALEX»

July 27th – August 2nd

The first tropical depression of this year originated within a tropical wave traveling from Africa in the morning of the 27th, some 600km Southwest of the Islands of Cabo Verde. With a motion between West and West-northwest, it kept gaining intensity and in the evening of the 28th it was rated as tropical storm Alex.

The Storm kept its heading and intensified further since the morning of the 30th. Starting on July 1st it bent its trajectory more to the Northeast and got exposed to some strong jet streams from the Southeast in the upper troposphere that sheared and weakened the system. It lost its identity and was located as a weak tropical wave extended along the 61 ° of longitude in the afternoon of the 2nd to be absorbed later by an upper low. This storm reached maximum winds of 85 km/h and a minimum central pressure of 1000 hPa.
