The winter season of 1998-1999 was little active since only 15 cold fronts arrived to
the country.
The first cold front caused abundant rainfall in the west of the country on October 23rd,
mainly on the north coast, where they became locally intense. Casablanca station had the
largest accumulate registered due to a cold front in this century and one of the largest
at all, including those due to the strike of hurricanes.
The first front of March was preceded by a very active squall line, which affected on
day 3rd the west and center of the country with heavy rains. It also produced
thunderstorms, strong winds and hailstorms at some locations. The largest amount of
rainfall was at Sancti Spíritus with 133 mm/24h.
The lowest minimum temperature was registered at Bainoa on March the 5th,
when the thermometer read 6.9°C during front number 11.
Remarkably warm temperatures were registered on April and the absolute high record for
the country was broken with readout of 38.8°C at Jucarito, province of Granma.
The season was also little active with regard to the occurrence of south winds over the
west part of the country since only two such events affected us.
