As it generally happens with tropical hurricanes (T. C.) from the XIX or previous centuries, the sources of first order meteorological information are scarce or nonexistent. The Hurricane of Matanzas doesn't make an exception.

For the study of this system we have taken as basic bibliography two works edited in the second half of the XIX century (Viñes, 1909; Fernández de Castro, 1871), and one of the first half of the XX century (Robado, 1933). Also, we revised newspapers and printed magazines from October 1870 (Aurora del Yumurí, from Matanzas, and Diario de la Marina, from Havana), with the purpose of analyzing the news published about this T. C. and the damages it caused.
