Conclusions.

  1. The Hurricane of Matanzas has been one of the more destructive T. C. among those that have affected Cuba in all times. As it passed over that city it caused 800 dead, and about 12 million pesos approximately in material damages. It also caused enormous economic loss in the whole region of the Island placed between meridians 81º and 82º of long. West.
  2. In Matanzas, a minimum pressure of 969,9 hpa was registered, although the accuracy of this registration cannot be guaranteed. The speed of the wind has been considered between 45 m/s and 55 m/s.
  3. This tropical system produced intense rainfall that caused the flooding of the basins of the rivers San Juan and Yumurí. To it must be added the battering of the wind that, blowing in a direction coincident with the longitudinal axis of the bay of Matanzas, produced a surge that blocked the draining of the mentioned rivers.
  4. The second part of the storm, with the change in the direction of the wind, caused that the victims; many constructions and all floating objects in the city were dragged to the waters of the bay.
  5. It is recommended to the authorities of the city of Matanzas, to value in their plans against catastrophes the possible occurrence of similar events in the future, attending mainly to the geographical physical characteristics of the region and in particular to the increment of the cyclone activity in the western Caribbean Sea in the last years.
